Coen brothers set to make TV debut with western series

After backing a TV adaptation of Fargo, the two brothers are set to make their TV bow with The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs.

Acclaimed filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen have announced a new western mini-series to mark their their long-awaited TV debut.
Titled The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, the show will be an anthology series - meaning each episode will feature its own independent cast and plot.
Set in the old, wild west, the show could also be released in cinemas and will be produced, directed and written by the brothers.
According to Variety, the production will be a partnership between Annapurna Television and the Coen's Mike Zoss Productions, in an "innovative approach that could combine television and theatrical".
Although this will signal the brother's directorial debut on TV, it is not the first time they have dipped their toes into the silver screen.
In 2014, FX networks premiered a TV version of their acclaimed 1996 independent film Fargo.

The show was successful and extended to a second season and a third is reportedly already in the works.
Plot details of The Ballad of Buster Scruggs are unknown, though it will intertwine six different story lines.
Joel and Ethan Coen are no strangers to the western genre, having helmed an Oscar-nominated remake of John Wayne's 1969 True Grit and the neo-noir Oscar-winner No Country For Old Men.
With Buster Scruggs, the Coens join a growing list of prestige directors taking their slice of the golden age of television.
Woody Allen was the latest with his critically panned show Crisis In Six Scenes, while David O Russell prepares his Amazon debut starring Robert De Niro and Julianne Moore.
The brothers have also written the script for George Clooney's upcoming directorial effort Suburbicon.
